Mikey's Short Term Trading Rules

1) Make up a list of stocks, commodities or ETF's to trade. This list should be names that have good earnings and high relative strength.
2) Monitor this list and throw out the weaker names
3) Buy only stocks or ETF's that are intermediate and daily up (green) and the market is Daily and intermediate term up (green)
4) Buy pullbacks on these stocks to the 20 and 50 day averages
Usually you get 4 to 6 20 day pullback buys and 2 or 3 50 day pullback buys in an intermediate term trend
5) More agressive traders can buy the 7 day average in the first 3 to 8 weeks of the uptrend.
6) Buy pullbacks not runups. A buy should not be easy or exciting but difficult and somewhat scary. DO NOT CHASE
7) Place stop at 5% below the buy price. Do not remove
8) Sell 3 to 5 days after the stock price takes out its most recent 2 week high with at least 15% gains
9) Uptrends that are 12 weeks or more may be ripe for a correction. The first 2 pullbacks to the 50 day are usually safe.
Intermediate term uptrends and downtrends generally last from 8 to 16 weeks with 12 weeks being the norm.
10) Shorting is a viable strategy in downtrends for experienced traders only. In general, reverse the above rules
11) Tweet Mikey @themarketshadow with questions or ideas

Mkt rallies back to Oct 22 breakdown AAPL reverses

The DJI rallied back to its Oct 22 breakdown as the Feds put pressure on the shorts. Volume was heavy at 4.043 billion on the NYSE and 1.975 billion on the NASDAQ. If there are going to increases in capital gains taxes then this rally gives the investors with the largest tax brackets good prices to take profits.

AAPL has reversed off of a double bottom breakdown and closed above its first break of 522.  I am long this stock with a tight stop of 500.  Gold continues its weakness closing at a 3 month low below 1700 at 1671.70. It closed at just above the 200 day average which I think will provide only minor support in the short term.  The talk is that investors are moving into stocks and selling Gold.  The Euro is now at. believe it or not, a 7 month high at 131.32. Get ready for some bullish talk to surface on the European situation.  The European market is now at a 1 1/2 year high.

Oil 87.93,  is trying to claw its way back into an uptrend and needs to close above its 10-3 low of 88.54 to do so.  Bonds have broken its 200 day for the third time in the past 3 months and usually its 3 times and you are out.  Remember the Fed commitment to interest rates? Munis continue their weakness.

This brings me to a point I cannot make enough. Do not listen the reason why things happen in the markets, follow the price action. If you would have played the Euro because of fundamentals you would have been short the whole year and getting your butt kicked. Stick with the trend and ignore the reasons. I think the applies to Gold now.  All the printing and problems and it is in a downtrend. Go with the trend and do not get hung up in the logic. Keep focused on the ALL TRENDS section of this blog and stay on the right side of the trade.
