Mikey's Short Term Trading Rules

1) Make up a list of stocks, commodities or ETF's to trade. This list should be names that have good earnings and high relative strength.
2) Monitor this list and throw out the weaker names
3) Buy only stocks or ETF's that are intermediate and daily up (green) and the market is Daily and intermediate term up (green)
4) Buy pullbacks on these stocks to the 20 and 50 day averages
Usually you get 4 to 6 20 day pullback buys and 2 or 3 50 day pullback buys in an intermediate term trend
5) More agressive traders can buy the 7 day average in the first 3 to 8 weeks of the uptrend.
6) Buy pullbacks not runups. A buy should not be easy or exciting but difficult and somewhat scary. DO NOT CHASE
7) Place stop at 5% below the buy price. Do not remove
8) Sell 3 to 5 days after the stock price takes out its most recent 2 week high with at least 15% gains
9) Uptrends that are 12 weeks or more may be ripe for a correction. The first 2 pullbacks to the 50 day are usually safe.
Intermediate term uptrends and downtrends generally last from 8 to 16 weeks with 12 weeks being the norm.
10) Shorting is a viable strategy in downtrends for experienced traders only. In general, reverse the above rules
11) Tweet Mikey @themarketshadow with questions or ideas

A sell signal only a mother would love

The fiscal cliff is being hammered into the brain of every investor.  If only we could get an agreement then the markets could move higher.  That may very well be true but an agreement would be about raising taxes and cutting spending. I would think that if the market moves higher it would be in a bad economy. Now days you need a bad economy to move stocks higher so maybe they are right.

The reality of whatever moves prices means nothing to this blog.  It is about trends. The intermediate and daily trends are down and this blog is on the sideline position wise.  That being said the airline group appears to be emerging after an 8 year run in oil prices. I like DAL and LCC in this space but not with a market in a downtrend.

The NASDAQ A/D made a new low today and the % of stocks > than 200 day on NYSE is now 50%. The last low of 12743 held again today and there is a minor positive divergence in the hourly chart. The short term turns positive above 12955.  The Put/call ratio is not excessive at .92 and .86 10 day. Put premiums are elevated at 118 but not excessive.  The  Mikey's are 3 day -52 7 day -93 20 day -17 and 50 day +45 so they are not oversold.  The Mikey fear factor of 93 says that the traders are not looking for anything big on the downside.  Bull/Bear readings are in favor of the Bulls 1.57 to 1, meaning that again the traders are not worried.

In conclusion, the market has just given an intermediate term sell signal and nobody cares. I would not be long with these kinds of readings.  The Ca Muni bond market looks shakey. It is very close to a sell signal I would honor that sell if we got it. Nat Gas resetablished its daily uptrend and rallied .17. The GDX miners index was much weaker than Gold and Silver and traded near last weeks lows. The dollar index 81.13 is back up to its Sept breakdown and just below a intermediate term uptrend both come with a trade above 81.50.  There is alot of red in the world stocks section.
