Mikey's Short Term Trading Rules

1) Make up a list of stocks, commodities or ETF's to trade. This list should be names that have good earnings and high relative strength.
2) Monitor this list and throw out the weaker names
3) Buy only stocks or ETF's that are intermediate and daily up (green) and the market is Daily and intermediate term up (green)
4) Buy pullbacks on these stocks to the 20 and 50 day averages
Usually you get 4 to 6 20 day pullback buys and 2 or 3 50 day pullback buys in an intermediate term trend
5) More agressive traders can buy the 7 day average in the first 3 to 8 weeks of the uptrend.
6) Buy pullbacks not runups. A buy should not be easy or exciting but difficult and somewhat scary. DO NOT CHASE
7) Place stop at 5% below the buy price. Do not remove
8) Sell 3 to 5 days after the stock price takes out its most recent 2 week high with at least 15% gains
9) Uptrends that are 12 weeks or more may be ripe for a correction. The first 2 pullbacks to the 50 day are usually safe.
Intermediate term uptrends and downtrends generally last from 8 to 16 weeks with 12 weeks being the norm.
10) Shorting is a viable strategy in downtrends for experienced traders only. In general, reverse the above rules
11) Tweet Mikey @themarketshadow with questions or ideas

Intermediate term break

Stocks broke down today and closed below the 7-27 breakout of 12960.  The daily and intermediate term trends are now down. To reverse up the DJI would have to trade above 13344.  This move coinsides with dollar strength and at this time appears that the Fed is more interested in lowering interest rates short term and is using stock sales proceeds to do it.  Long positions should be liquidated if you are a trend follower.  The trend may reverse back up but this discipline will protect capital at the expense of missing a turn.

There were 553 up and 2464 down today on the NYSE on expanded volume of 4.236 billion shares.  The NASDAQ had 374 up and 2120 down on 2.015 billion shares. This is the second crossing of the 200 day average this year with the last time being on 6/1.  That crossing was reversed 1 week later and remained above the 200 day until today. There are 56% of the stocks on the NYSE  above their 200 day average so  the breaking of the 200 day average could still be reversed.

Gold and silver outperformed today on the notion that they are counter trend to the market.  This has not been the case for the past 4 years but it sounds good anyway. The trend on Gold is still up intermediate term so positions can be held but until it reverses above 1750 no longs should be added.  My personal opinion, which is frequently wrong, is that gold will follow the market down.

The long term bond market turned an impressive performance, thanks Ben, and is now all green.  The utilities market has now given up the entire gain for the year. That is to say you would have been better off in cash earning nothing than to have been in utilities this year up to this point.

In summary, it looks like the powers that be want to have the budget problem settled.  That would be the reason to tank stocks because it is an attention getter. It also gets the public looking at the shy politicians who would prefer to remain out of the spotlight so expect some dialog to take place soon. In the meantime, stay out of stocks below 13344.
