Mikey's Short Term Trading Rules

1) Make up a list of stocks, commodities or ETF's to trade. This list should be names that have good earnings and high relative strength.
2) Monitor this list and throw out the weaker names
3) Buy only stocks or ETF's that are intermediate and daily up (green) and the market is Daily and intermediate term up (green)
4) Buy pullbacks on these stocks to the 20 and 50 day averages
Usually you get 4 to 6 20 day pullback buys and 2 or 3 50 day pullback buys in an intermediate term trend
5) More agressive traders can buy the 7 day average in the first 3 to 8 weeks of the uptrend.
6) Buy pullbacks not runups. A buy should not be easy or exciting but difficult and somewhat scary. DO NOT CHASE
7) Place stop at 5% below the buy price. Do not remove
8) Sell 3 to 5 days after the stock price takes out its most recent 2 week high with at least 15% gains
9) Uptrends that are 12 weeks or more may be ripe for a correction. The first 2 pullbacks to the 50 day are usually safe.
Intermediate term uptrends and downtrends generally last from 8 to 16 weeks with 12 weeks being the norm.
10) Shorting is a viable strategy in downtrends for experienced traders only. In general, reverse the above rules
11) Tweet Mikey @themarketshadow with questions or ideas

US market ends quarter in uptrend

News Highlights

World markets and commodities including oil are weaker than the US market. China and Brazil are now in downtrends. The interesting thing is that the dollar continues to be soft. Maybe its the need to prop up Europe and the bailout there that is keeping pressure on the dollar.  The US market at end the week and the first quarter are in a uptrend with oil and commodities weakening.  The story is one of a weakening world economy and a strengthening US economy. Most major groups are up with Gold, Mining, and energy in downtrends.

Natural Gas nears $ 2.00...A blowout low?

News Highlights

Natural Gas is 2.12. It was 4.06 Oct 31, 2011. It looks to me like this is a washout low coming. I would not expect a move back to 4.00 anytime soon but 2.12???  I would expect it to trade back to its breakdown level of 3.55 at some point in the next 2 years. That would be a 67% return. Patience is required.

The ETF that tracks Nat Gas is UNG 16.25.  I believe that it is setting up for a major long term bull market.  That means years. Demand is increasing and so is supply but the environmentalists will have a say on supply at some point.

Traders have been trying to buy the low for the last 3 years and have been burned. This is what happens when you buy something that is cheap. I believe that Natural gas has moved from cheap to get me out. Traders and investors are just saying get me out I don't care if its cheap or not. That is the way bottoms are formed. The big players gobble up all of the sales and hold for the long run.  I do not know what the price of natural gas should be or what it will be in the next 3 months but this has all the earmaks of a major low.

Trends weakening

News Highlights

The trend is weakening and more and more sell offs are occurring. The hourly gave a second sell signal in the last week.  The Bull /Bear is now 2.21 to 1 and the level of fear is non existent. Uncle Ben again last week said he stands ready to help and I think there is a false sense of security in here. It is all to pat with the whole game being the Fed and their omnipotent ability to buy everything.  All they have succeeded in doing is to put 3.7 trillion in cash into the Corporate balance sheets. That includes a huge chunk of change into their agents, the banks.

I am thinking that we are close to some kind of sell off.  The trail balloon before the real deal. IBD went to uptrend under pressure today and I agree.  The same cannot be said of Gold and Silver which are entering downtrends. They are right on the edge of a big selloff. Even king oil is showing weakness.  The energy sector in the stock market is in a downtrend and they usually lead the commodity. The same was true of the Gold stocks and gold.  Commodities and also on the edge of a cliff again. What it will take is some dollar strength to push them.  China and Brazil both are showing weakness and have entered downtrends.
