Mikey's Short Term Trading Rules

1) Make up a list of stocks, commodities or ETF's to trade. This list should be names that have good earnings and high relative strength.
2) Monitor this list and throw out the weaker names
3) Buy only stocks or ETF's that are intermediate and daily up (green) and the market is Daily and intermediate term up (green)
4) Buy pullbacks on these stocks to the 20 and 50 day averages
Usually you get 4 to 6 20 day pullback buys and 2 or 3 50 day pullback buys in an intermediate term trend
5) More agressive traders can buy the 7 day average in the first 3 to 8 weeks of the uptrend.
6) Buy pullbacks not runups. A buy should not be easy or exciting but difficult and somewhat scary. DO NOT CHASE
7) Place stop at 5% below the buy price. Do not remove
8) Sell 3 to 5 days after the stock price takes out its most recent 2 week high with at least 15% gains
9) Uptrends that are 12 weeks or more may be ripe for a correction. The first 2 pullbacks to the 50 day are usually safe.
Intermediate term uptrends and downtrends generally last from 8 to 16 weeks with 12 weeks being the norm.
10) Shorting is a viable strategy in downtrends for experienced traders only. In general, reverse the above rules
11) Tweet Mikey @themarketshadow with questions or ideas

What does 13000 mean? Mikey will tell you

News Highlights

I was listening to a financial "expert" this week telling the reporter the meaning of the DJI crossing 13000 briefly on Tuesday.  He said that it just showed that the economy was getting better and better things are coming. I was asked by a friend what 13000 meant today. I said it is a message by the Fed to the public that all is well. That is the point of the advance in stocks. It is to "prove" that things are getting better.

To the average guy there has been no improvement. His major asset is stuck near 5 year lows.  He is paying near record highs for gasoline. His banks are charging exhorbitant rates for his revolving credit. His 401K has retuned to within 10% of 2007 levels but he sold out in 2009 because his wages and benefits were cut and he was broke.

He is hearing that gasoline may go to $5 because of the Iranian thing and that his government is pouring over 1 trillion into a big deep hole every year to keep things afloat. The Fed is manufacturing a higher stock market by trading Dollars and Euros back and forth to prop up bad loans.  What does 13000 mean?  It means higher prices and a stagnant economy and more mismanagement by the Fed and the government. It means that people will not now question the politicians when if you just look at stocks you can tell everything is OK.

I heard the same thing from the Fed in 2006 when they talked about the banks and real estate. They had high stock prices to prove everything was OK then too.  I can only say that they are more interested in appearances than the real substance of the economy.

Interest rates have been lowered to refinance government debt.  Those funds are not available to the working stiff.  There has been alot of government debt refinanced at 3% in the last 3 years at the same time the average guy is paying the same high rates that the banks charge for his revolving credit. In the end,  this government debt will be devalued one way or another either by "inflation" and higher rates or by the Greece method.  In the meantime the DJI crossed 13000 this week and that means things are getting better.
